Controlled Substances | Angstrom Gallery
Controlled Substances
Curated by Kevin Rubén Jacobs
Jun 9 – July 7, 2012
RECEPTION Jun 9 from 6 - 10pm
Angstrom Gallery is pleased to announce Controlled Substances, a group exhibition including the work of Eli Walker, Kelly Kroener, Joshua von Ammon, Lucy Kirkman, Justin Hunter Allen, Alex DiJulio, Samantha McCurdy, and Michael A. Morris.
Curated by Kevin Rubén Jacobs, Owner and Director of Oliver Francis Gallery and Exhibitions Manager at the Goss-Michael Foundation, Controlled Substances is grounded on the relationship between the artist and their work, the compulsive nature to create and communicate, as well as the ever-important relationships that build community amongst peers and fellow artists. Beyond an aesthetic cohesiveness, the exhibition is a testament to the vitality of the newest emerging arts beacon, Dallas. Several artists featured in this exhibition have lived in the Dallas area before departing for their BFA or MFA’s elsewhere, returning soon afterwards, while some artists are fresh to the Dallas area with less than 4 months of acclimation. Nonetheless, these artists share a common goal: to develop into powerful cultural contributors.
The work chosen for Controlled Substances highlights the practices by each artist. While carefully commending formalism and addressing quixotic folly, these works act on autonomy and quiet political conditions. The works range through a variety of media, including video, painting, kinetic and felt floor sculptures.
The opening reception for Controlled Substances is Saturday, June 09 from 6 – 10 PM. The exhibition will be on view until July 07 by appointment.

new digital drawings
Or are they digital paintings?
Since I don't presently have a studio for oil painting, I am satisfying myself making things like these! I am having a lot of fun getting prints made at Walgreens. They look suprisingly good after a little testing for scale, dpi, etc.
My digital painting "Mystic Adoration of the Tablet," the van Eyck copy, is going to be in a show in Scotland. It's called the Unoriginal Show, put on by the RSA NEW COLLECTIVE.
Here's a cat drawing and a degas rip:

Hand-drawn LOLcats
Well, I drew these on the computer, which, questionably counts as "hand" drawn. I used a mouse and a tablet, and an online program called Shi Painter.

Wangechi Mutu
Wangechi Mutu: artist, painter. I saw her work at the Weils contemporary art museum in Brussels. The show blew me away. Justin and I were really excited by the show and came back to the apartment and made watercolors all night.
I was reminded of her work by meandering googling, and since this time I have an internet connection, please look. It's all really gorgeous. Her craft is amazing, her imagery, spot-on.

Artist spotlight: studio visit with Julia Dzikiewicz
![]() |
| Julia Dzikiewicz: “Ms. Stevens visits Ms. Paul” Mixed media encaustic, 50"x30" |
Julia writes,
"As a woman artist with a studio at the Workhouse Arts Center, a former prison, my work reflects upon the Suffragettes who were sent here. They were force-fed, put into solitary confinement and sleep deprived for demanding the right to vote. I often wonder how they awakened to the idea that they deserved basic human rights, in a time where this was considered absurd. These paintings combine images of women from that era, portraits of figures in the suffrage movement, and icons of their oppression and their struggle for freedom."

| Julia Dzikiewicz: "Awake" Encaustic, 14"x42" |
Julia has exhibited widely in Virginia and elsewhere. Earlier bodies of work include meditations on global warming and 9/11. Visit her website to learn more, and check out the Workhorse Center.

Little Update
I've seen and done many amazing things the past two months. I traveled to Provence and Burgandy with my Parents, passed a week contemplating the ocean horizon in Croatia (and getting tanned), practiced my French for a week in the countryside outside of Agen, and explored the coast of Normandy and Brittany with an adventurous friend. My time in Paris is nearly over, so I am seeing and experiencing as much of the city that I can, hosting travelers and sharing my love of the city with them.
I have been drawing constantly, looking around me and scheming for future painting projects.

some josh smith ......
I can just look at anything and paint it. Maybe not perfectly, but can do it. I can make a really good painting. Last year, I started making paintings of fish that way. I thought it would he nice to have a big painting on the wall of a fish jumping. That is exciting. It makes you wonder why it is there. It makes you proud of seeing it. There's a stupidity to it-and then again, it's nature. Courbet made a career out of that.
.......
I recently found a leaf, which I've been working with. I was in Pennsylvania, and I picked up this leaf and thought, "This will be easy to paint." I always try to paint things that are easy to paint. I never want to get hung up on trying to render something.

yves
Yesterday night, Wednesday, we went into an abstract café… the abstractionists were there. They are easy to recognize because they give off an atmosphere of abstract painting, plus you see their paintings in their eyes. Maybe I’m delirious, but I have the impression I see things like that. In any event, we sat down with themÉ. Then we began speaking of the book Yves Peintures. Later, I went to get it from the car and I laid it down on the table. At the very first few pages the abstractionists’ eyes began to change. Their eyes lit up and in the depths, pure, beautiful single colors appeared.
