Controlled Substances | Angstrom Gallery

Controlled Substances
Curated by Kevin Rubén Jacobs
Jun 9 – July 7, 2012
RECEPTION Jun 9 from 6 - 10pm

Angstrom Gallery is pleased to announce Controlled Substances, a group exhibition including the work of Eli Walker, Kelly Kroener, Joshua von Ammon, Lucy Kirkman, Justin Hunter Allen, Alex DiJulio, Samantha McCurdy, and Michael A. Morris.

Curated by Kevin Rubén Jacobs, Owner and Director of Oliver Francis Gallery and Exhibitions Manager at the Goss-Michael Foundation, Controlled Substances is grounded on the relationship between the artist and their work, the compulsive nature to create and communicate, as well as the ever-important relationships that build community amongst peers and fellow artists. Beyond an aesthetic cohesiveness, the exhibition is a testament to the vitality of the newest emerging arts beacon, Dallas. Several artists featured in this exhibition have lived in the Dallas area before departing for their BFA or MFA’s elsewhere, returning soon afterwards, while some artists are fresh to the Dallas area with less than 4 months of acclimation. Nonetheless, these artists share a common goal: to develop into powerful cultural contributors.

The work chosen for Controlled Substances highlights the practices by each artist. While carefully commending formalism and addressing quixotic folly, these works act on autonomy and quiet political conditions. The works range through a variety of media, including video, painting, kinetic and felt floor sculptures.

The opening reception for Controlled Substances is Saturday, June 09 from 6 – 10 PM. The exhibition will be on view until July 07 by appointment.

new digital drawings

Or are they digital paintings?
Since I don't presently have a studio for oil painting, I am satisfying myself making things like these! I am having a lot of fun getting prints made at Walgreens. They look suprisingly good after a little testing for scale, dpi, etc.
My digital painting "Mystic Adoration of the Tablet," the van Eyck copy, is going to be in a show in Scotland. It's called the Unoriginal Show, put on by the RSA NEW COLLECTIVE.

Here's a cat drawing and a degas rip:

Hand-drawn LOLcats

Well, I drew these on the computer, which, questionably counts as "hand" drawn. I used a mouse and a tablet, and an online program called Shi Painter.
